Students of the Department of Journalism of the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian (Prykarpattia) National University became the winners and laureates of the XV All-Ukrainian competition of student and student creative works “I am a journalist!”. Two video works – “The war made me grow up: the story of a student-migrant from Donetsk region” and “The taste of home in a new city: the business of immigrants” – took 2nd place in the “Video” nomination in the student age category.
The students filmed the videos for the series “War: Life Before and After,” which airs on Stefanyk-TV.
In the work “The War Made Me Grow Up: The Story of a Student-Immigrant from Donetsk Region,” sophomores Tetyana Saray, Anna Pashchenko, and Sofia Kucheruk told the story of Vladyslav Randaruk, a third-year student at the Institute of Arts. Due to the full-scale war, he left his home and moved to the Carpathian region.
“This work was really difficult — both morally and physically. Together with the girls, we sought to tell the story of a student-migrant and show that such stories exist and it is important to speak about them out loud,” says Tetyana Saray.
Third-year students Tetyana Fuchenko and Viktoriya Hanchuk filmed a video about the Popov family’s own case from occupied Holaya Prystan, in the Kherson region.
“A Taste of Home in a New City: The Business of IDPs” is a story about how grandmother’s usual dishes grew into a store and helped a family adapt to Ivano-Frankivsk. One of the authors of the video, Tetyana Fuchenko, says that working on the topic was very important to her.
“My classmate and I talked about the business of displaced people — people who, despite the war and the loss of their homes, managed to start from scratch and create their own business. What was especially valuable to me was that our work was appreciated at the competition. This is confirmation that we were able to reach the audience and raise a truly important topic,” the girl says.
In addition to the victory, eight more journalism students received laureate diplomas. Their series of text interviews, prepared for the book “Between the Text: Journalists for Journalists”, won an honorable mention in the “Article” nomination.
During the award ceremony, which took place in Kyiv on March 11, thanks were given to the supervisors of the work, associate professors of the Department of Journalism Iryna Kopystynska – for preparing the winners of the competition, and Halyna Prystay – for preparing the laureates.
